Highway 2 is currently closed from Independent Road to well inside of the Alberta Border because of a gasoline spill.
A semi rollover caused the spill and clean-up crews have arrived on scene and are currently removing contaminants from the spill. Â At 10:22pm the Dawson Creek RCMP responded to a semi-rollover just inside the BC border on Highway 2.
The semi-tractor and the B-train it was hauling had gone off road and overturned in the ditch. Â The damage from the rollover resulted in a 35,000 litre gasoline tank being punctured. Â The punctured tank released an unknown quantity of gasoline into the surrounding environment.Â
The driver of the semi received a broken ankle from the collision. Â He was transported to the Dawson Creek Hospital and treated for his injury. Â The driver was unable to explain to investigators why his vehicle left the roadway.
Highway 2 has since been shut down due to the danger posed by the spill. Â The highway will remain shut down until later this afternoon when clean-up crews have made the area safe for motorist travel. Â According to www.drivebc.ca the road will re-open at 12pm. Â There is also a detour in effect 8km north of the BC/Alberta Border.
The Highway is currently closed from Independent Road through to the Alberta Border.
