Fort St. John is officially the Forest Capital of BC.

While the city was named 2009 Forest Capital about a month ago, representative for the network of BC’s forest professionals, Lance Ollenberger, presented the official plaque to the city on Monday night.

He says the city won based on three criteria: the economic ties, the community relationship to the forest and its diverse forest capital program.

The award began in 1988.  The title has traveled across the province, but remarkably has been awarded to a northern community only once.

Mayor Lantz says the award gives Fort St. John some much needed recognition.

The only other Northern community given the honour was Fort Nelson, in 2006.
