Bruce Power Alberta, which has submitted the application for a nuclear power plant in the Alberta Peace, is claiming it could create close to 3,000 jobs. It says that would include 1,900 permanent, full-time positions at the site west of Peace River and another 800 indirect jobs throughout the region.
However, a spokesman for the group opposed to the plant doesn’t see job creation as a viable selling point in a province which already has more jobs than workers.
The group "Stop Poisoning Our Communities" argues the impact on health and the local ecosystem created by a nuclear power plant is too high a price to pay for the 4,000 megwatts of electricity it would generate.
If Bruce Power gets approval from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, it will then launch a 30 month detailed assessment of the project. The proposed site is about 22 km from Grimshaw and has also drawn official concern on this side of the border, in both Fort St. John and Dawson Creek.
