The grants are meant to help new and expanding non-profit sports programs so that more British Columbians have opportunities to participate in sports. The funds are normally used for equipment, coach training, or program development.
The focus is on rural communities where sport opportunities less available, as well as large urban populations where there is low sport participation. In total, 25 different groups in 18 communities received up to $2,000 each from the Local Sport Program Development Fund, which is administered by viaSport.
