FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The City of Fort St. John proclaimed May 27th to June 3rd as Pride Week at last week’s regular council meeting.
The North Peace Pride Society (NPPS) requested the proclamation on May 9th in order to recognize and promote Fort St. John as a community that celebrates LGBTQ+ diversity and inclusiveness.
The city’s proclamation states the intent of Pride Week in Fort St. John is to encourage the city to be a safe and welcoming place for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities to call home.
By holding Pride Week, the city hopes to show support for local youth and other community members who experience bullying and harassment based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.
This year’s Pride Week theme is “Living Authentically as Nature Intended.”
The NPPS is inviting Fort St. John community members to join Pride Week celebration events.
On June 3rd, a Pride Walk and Festival will kick off at Centennial Park, featuring performances by drag queens and kings, along with dancers, singers, and a live band. The NPPS will host a Pride Dance at the Pomeroy Hotel on Saturday evening to finish off Pride Week celebrations.
More information about Pride Week events can be found on the North Peace Pride Society’s website.
