FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Local Rotarian Vince van Wieringen was recently awarded the Golden Gavel for his work with the Rotary Club of Fort St. John.

Van Wieringen was president of the afternoon club in 2021 and 2022. According to the Rotary Club of Fort St. John, van Wieringen was instrumental in keeping the club “grounded and active” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Keeping the club “engaged” was something van Wieringen said was difficult among the restrictions.

“A big part of Rotary is the camaraderie. It’s about getting together, about sharing ideas, about having lunch together and talking about upcoming events,” van Weiringen explained.

“So trying to guide that through those times virtually was difficult.”

Apart from guiding the club through difficult times, van Wieringen was also responsible for “delivering record results” with the annual Drive-Thru Breakfast fundraiser.

The annual event raised a record-breaking $24,000 in 2022, and $22,917.17 in 2021.

To van Wieringen, fundraisers like the Drive-Thru Breakfast and other work done in the Rotary Club are the most important part of receiving the Golden Gavel award.

“It reminds me of why I’m a Rotarian. It doesn’t mean much about the award itself. It’s a golden gavel. It’s great, but it means more to me as a Rotarian of not just Fort St. John, but Rotary International, all the good things that Rotary does.”

The Rotary Club of Fort St. John thanked van Wieringen for his hard work and dedication to the community in a post on social media.
