FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Sarah Byford is raising funds for the Step Up For Families initiative from Ronald McDonald House BC and Yukon.

This month, Sarah will be walking, running or rolling to raise funds to support the families who stay at the house.

Sarah’s goal is to travel the distance equivalent to her home in Fort St. John to the Prince George Ronald McDonald house she stayed at when she was younger while awaiting open-heart surgery.

Her mother, Amy, recalls the conversation she had with her daughter while staying at the RMH, where Sarah’s drive to fundraise was born.

“They said there was a risk she might not make it. She looks at me and says, ‘well, if I don’t make it, you need to fundraise,” said Amy.

“This is our hardest fundraiser to do in this town because nobody thinks it’s local, but more than half the families are from the north. I’ve met tons of families, a lot are from Prince George. I’ve met tons from Fort St. John that I didn’t even know,” Amy explains.

“It is more local than not.”

In the past year, Sarah has raised funds by selling books for the RMH, selling cotton candy for residential school survivors, and collecting toy donations for the Salvation Army Toy Drive.

To donate to Sarah’s cause, visit The Canadian Grind, Unforgettable Memories or her fundraising page.
