DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – Film buffs and popcorn enthusiasts with hearts of gold should mark their calendars – Centre Cinema will be raising funds for Ukraine on April 6 at 7 p.m., donating 100 percent of the funds to war relief efforts.
Manager Shella Barredo says the Dawson Creek theatre is just of many taking part across Canada, and will be showing the film ‘That Never Happened – Canada’s First National Internment Centre’, a harrowing documentary on the 24 internment camps ran from 1914 to 1920 due to WWI.
“We already donated a total of $12,300 so far, with all our cinemas around Canada. We just wanted a chance to help and do more,” said Barredo.
Over 88,000 people were forced to register and more than 8,500 civilians were wrongfully imprisoned, not for anything they had done but simply because of where they came from: Ukraine, and other parts of Eastern Europe, identified as ‘Enemy Aliens’ by the Canadian government.
All admissions are by donation and will go directly to the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.
