FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – BC Hydro says it’s firing back up its conveyor system to haul materials to Site C.

The 5-kilometre long conveyor belt hauls glacial till from the 85th Avenue Industrial Lands to the dam site and generally runs from late March to November every year.

Glacial till is an “impervious clay-like material” that will form the core of the dam, according to the company.

BC Hydro says it is the primary source of transportation because it reduces traffic on local roads, creates fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and results in less noise and dust.

“We understand that conveyor operations may be disruptive to people living nearby, and thank you for your patience as we work to finish the Site C project safely,” said a statement on BC Hydro’s website.

The company says work could take place 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
