FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – A Fort St. John artist is rallying financial support for Ukraine Monday with a silent auction going live at Safeway.

“I asked my employer and they said yes. I know lots of friends that also are talented, so I asked them and they said they would help,” said artist Diana Hofmann, who is organizing the initiative.

The art being put up for auction prominently features sunflowers, the national flower of Ukraine. In addition to hosting the silent auction, Safeway has donated cupcakes to the cause, which were decorated by Hofmann.

“I just think that it’s been nothing but bad news lately and I wanted to help out in some way,” she said. “I thought about how horrible it is for people who do have family there. I have the time and the energy to do this, so I did.”

Hofmann is a member of both the Flying Colours Artists’ Association and the local potters guild, where her love for art really began to flourish, she said.

“It’s inspiring to see everybody, and especially artists doing little fundraisers all over,” added Hofmann.

The auction will be live until 10 p.m. on Monday, with the funds going directly to the National Bank of Ukraine, bringing relief right to the front lines.
