FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Energetic City Roller Derby Association is back after having to hang up their skates for two seasons due to COVID-19 and are on the lookout for new recruits.
Bethany Roberts with the derby association says this is a great opportunity for beginners to join the team because the team will be getting back to basics.
“Nobody’s been on their skates for two years. Back to the basic skills and the basic strategy,” Roberts said.
She adds that the club will host one belt and has had clubs in surrounding areas interested in competing.
Individuals interested in joining must bring their own gear such as skates, elbow and knee pads, mouthguards and helmets.
Members must be 19 or older, but Roberts says those interested between the ages of 17-18 to reach out to the group.
The club will start in early April and go until the end of June. Roberts says the group will follow the ever-evolving public health orders that are in place at the time.
“It’s totally going to be dependent on what’s happening in the world, same with vaccination requirements. We will just be following whatever the current public health order is,” Roberts said.
She encourages anyone on the fence about joining the team to come out and give it a try.
“One of my favourite things about it is it’s such an inclusive community, and there’s a spot for everyone on the team, regardless of your body size, your athleticism. There’s a spot for the fast people. There’s a spot for the hard hitters. There’s a place for everybody in the community,” Roberts said.
