FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – To commemorate the 77th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Mayor Lori Ackerman has proclaimed January 27th as International Holocaust Remembrance Day in Fort St. John.

“Through the #WeRemember initiative, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs and the World Jewish Congress are reaching out to millions of people across the globe to encourage them to partake, inspire conversation, and help ensure that a new generation will learn the story and lessons of the Holocaust,” said the city in a Facebook post.

“Now, more than ever, we must come together to remember the past and build a better future.”

In the proclamation, the city says the purpose of International Holocaust Remembrance Day is to serve as a day to commemorate the victims of the Nazi regime and to promote Holocaust education throughout the world.

The proclamation was requested at the January 24th Regular Council Meeting by the Fort St. John Alliance Church.
