FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – A recent study by the Province suggests the existing Old Fort road alignment is the best option for access to the community.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure released a 86 page report on December 3rd after reviewing road options to the community.
This review focused on long-term access reliability to the Old Fort community, following landslides in the area in 2018 and 2020.
Alternative routes were identified in the review but failed to demonstrate a superior alignment, said the ministry. It was determined that the best option is to pursue improvements to Old Fort Road.
The review was a multiple account evaluation that studied reliability, cost, geotechnical, structural, environmental, hydrotechnical, and constructability considerations.
The ministry says further geotechnical investigations will take place in the new year to understand geohazards and identify potential mitigative work.
A landslide on Old Fort Road blocked access to the community and was eventually repaired until the slide moved again in June 2020.
