Plans in motion for second Resident Santa Parade

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – After an impromptu group decided to spend evenings spreading holiday cheer from community to community last year, plans are in motion for a second Resident Santa Parade.

One of the organizers, Stephanie Walsh, says the community needs a little Christmas cheer.

“I saw a bunch of people do it last year, and it was so exciting because we were just minding our own business. All of a sudden, we heard horns and music, and a parade went by our house,” said Walsh. “Then people started catching on to it, and it became this big thing, so I wondered if people would want to do it again this year.”

Walsh says about 56 people have joined the Facebook group, and she’s trying to come up with a plan for dates and times that a similar parade will run this year.

“It’s probably going to be a weekend thing, and we’re discussing December 10th, 11th and 12th. Because the town’s big, we’ll do half one night, half the other night sort of thing.”

This year, Walsh says there will be a special addition to the parade, and of course, the ‘big man in red.’

“This year, we have a fire truck. One of the guys in the group is a volunteer firefighter from Charlie Lake.”

The addition of the fire truck will require additional planning so that the vehicle, and its turning radius, have space to go from street to street.

Walsh says the reason for doing her own parade when the City is holding a reverse parade is that not everyone in the community has a vehicle, and she wants to bring the holidays right to peoples’ doorsteps.

“I’ll never forget looking outside and seeing this parade going past my house. It was so cool. And then the next day, it came back again with more vehicles.”

Walsh says organizers are still working out the details, but all information about the parade will be posted on the 2021 Santa Claus Parade Facebook group.
