UPDATE: As of 6:30pm Monday runways at the airport are back open.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The North Peace Regional Airport has temporarily closed due to freezing rain and fog in the region.

The airport put out a statement Monday, stating the conditions have made it unsafe for flight operations.

Anyone with travel plans for Monday or Tuesday is asked to check the status of their flight directly with the airline as the conditions call for cancellations and delays.

“Thank you for your patience as we monitor the weather and work to restore safe conditions for flights to and from YXJ,” said the airport in a social media post on Monday afternoon.

Many residents across the Peace region woke up to slippery roads on Monday after freezing rain occurred overnight. Environment Canada also issued a special weather statement about windspeeds reaching 70-80 km/h in the Peace.

School District 59 and School District 60 cancelled all school buses and B.C. Transit buses were not running in Fort St. John on Monday.
