FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Metis flag will be raised outside City Hall on November 16th in honour of Louis Riel Day.

Jacqueline Alderking, president of the Fort St. John Metis Society, penned a letter to Mayor Lori Ackerman on October 21st requesting the flag be raised.

The flag raising is a part of the Society’s goal to “provide culturally relevant opportunities for growth in the community.”

“For the last thirty-three years, the Fort St. John Metis Society has strived to expand programs and events for the Metis people of Fort St. John,” said Alderking’s letter.

Louis Riel Day commemorates the 1885 execution of Louis Riel for defending Metis rights and is held on November 16th.

The Society hopes to host a small celebration for Louis Riel Day, following current public health orders.
