International students got a taste of the West last weekend, taking up the reins and learning how to ride horses.

Northern Lights College students Jay Jain, Vaibhav Patil, Vishaldeep Singh, and Ming Li were among those taking lessons out in Farmington on Saturday.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for students,” said Jain. “We haven’t rode or grown up around horses, but we’re really excited to learn.”

The sessions were led by instructor Samantha Dilworth at her indoor riding arena, built only four years ago. Dilworth has been riding since she was 10, growing up in Tumbler Ridge and previously teaching a horse education program for School District 59.

She said the Northern Lights College rodeo team reached out and asked if she was willing to take on some students.

“It’s the first time they’ve been out, it’s been really neat. Some were nervous at the start but by the end we had them trotting around,” Dilworth said.

More student riding lessons are being planned with the college and will likely continue into the winter months.
