VICTORIA, B.C. – The Northern Health region added 117 cases on Thursday, moving the active case count to 977.

One death was recorded in the region Thursday, bringing the total to 170.

British Columbia added 832 new cases, bringing the active case count to 5,697.

There are 330 people in hospital, 148 of whom are in critical care.

The province added five COVID-19 deaths Thursday, bringing the total to 1,915.

Since last spring, 181,769 cases have been recorded across B.C., and 173,786 have since recovered.

As of Thursday, 87.3 per cent of eligible British Columbians 12 and older have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, and 79.9 per cent have both doses.

A Chilliwack elementary school has been temporarily closed due to what the principal is calling a spike in COVID-19 cases.

A statement from Promontory Heights Elementary says cases have been climbing since the first week of classes, and principal Chuck Bloch says the school’s medical health officer ordered the school closed to stop the spread.

The school will be doing online classes until at least October 4th.

Chilliwack falls under The Fraser Health Authority, the region with the most active cases in BC with 1,734.
