CHETWYND, B.C. – Thanks to the support of volunteers, the staff and residents at Chetwynd General Hospital’s long-term care unit have a beautiful healing garden outside the building to enjoy.
Jennifer Nickel, Clinical Practice Lead, says the response from the community of Chetwynd to help out has been amazing.
Mountain View Cottage began to follow the Eden philosophy of care a few years ago. The Eden philosophy of care focuses on improving the three most common ailments seniors face: boredom, loneliness and helplessness.
By restoring and revitalizing the healing garden, it serves as a way to decrease all three concerns for seniors at the home as well as throughout the community.
In addition to the garden, residents and families have been given the opportunity to ‘adopt a box’ and have a space with their own plants to look after.
“The residents were just so happy to know there would be a safe outside space for them to use,” said Nickel.
According to a release from Northern Health, the following groups volunteered to restore the healing garden at Mountain View Cottage: Chetwynd Rotary Club, Chetwynd Fire Department, Pine River Holdings Peace Country Rentals, Twin Sisters Native Plant Nursery, Aim Trucking, Home Hardware Chetwynd, The District of Chetwynd, The Sukunka Group, TBK Watson Carpentry, Chetwynd Redi-Mix, all of the staff and residents of Chetwynd Hospital.
