VICTORIA, B.C. – The Province has extended the state of emergency to continue supporting the wildfire response and to ensure public safety.

Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Mike Farnworth, announced on Tuesday that the state of emergency would be extended until 12:01 a.m. on September 15th.

“Things are trending in the right direction, but we must remain alert and aware of the fires still burning and the potential for others to start,” said Farnworth. “Extending this state of emergency recognizes that the potential for significant wildfire activity persists, even as the nights get longer and the days cool down a bit, so I urge British Columbians to continue to be vigilant.”

Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, Katrine Conroy, echoed Farnworth’s statement that the fire season isn’t over yet.

“Let’s help fire crews by doing our part to be fire safe and report fire activity, so we can get through the remainder of this season without any more human-caused fires,” said Conroy.

The provincial state of emergency was first declared on July 21st to allow the Province to take extraordinary action under the powers of the Emergency Program Act and mobilize local, provincial and federal resources for a coordinated response.

“While extraordinary powers under the Emergency Program Act are not needed at this time, the declaration gives the Province the ability to move quickly, if the need arises.

The Provincial government can extend the state of emergency as necessary, according to a release.

As of September 1st, there are 49 active fires in the Prince George Fire Centre, and 217 fires burn across the province.
