This month’s Co-op Community Champion is Lisa Jewell, the outreach and housing coordinator for the Women’s Resource Society.

Co-op highlights people in Fort St. John who should be recognized for their work in the community. Anyone looking to nominate a community-minded person in need of recognition, head to Energeticcity’s website.

After getting into some trouble in the past, Jewell decided to go back to school and get a degree in social work with a specialization in First Nations.

Through college, Jewell worked at the Salvation Army as a caseworker before applying for the position with the Society, where she has worked for two years.

Jewell runs many programs, including the harm reduction program, and the second stage transitional housing program, with 12 units that she manages. She may have a lot on her plate, but Jewell has no plans to leave the WRS.

“I love working at the Women’s Resource; my team is a group of incredibly educated specialized women, ” said Jewell. ”

“We work really well together, and everybody’s there for the right reasons. We don’t have people who are there just for a paycheck. We have people there that are passionate about their programs and genuinely want to help the community move forward with whatever issues are causing them to walk through that front door.”

In order to better serve those in need, Jewell is planning on getting her master’s degree in social work in the next few years.

“So that I can  diagnose mental health conditions and assist with providing an answer for that.”

The brunt of Jewell’s free time is spent with her kids and after-school activities, and she just recently joined the board of directors for the North Peace Gymnastics Association.
