ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – Fort St. John’s Tristen Nielsen won’t have to stray far from his old home rink in Langley when he suits up for the Abbotsford Canucks next season.

After finishing a five-year career in the Western Hockey League with the Calgary Hitmen and Vancouver Giants, Nielsen signed a two-year AHL contract with the Abbotsford Canucks.

Ryan Johnson, General Manager of the Abbotsford Canucks announced the deal for the 5’10, 192-pound forward on Friday.

In the 22-game restricted 2020-2021 season, Nielsen led the Giants in goals last season with 15, and he finished second in assists and points, with 17 and 32 respectively.

Nielsen recorded 10 multi-point games and four games with three or more points last season.

The Abbotsford Canucks were announced as the American Hockey League affiliate team of the Vancouver Canucks on June 29th, 2021. Since the 2013-2014 season, the AHL affiliate was based out of Utica, NY.

The move will bring the Vancouver Canucks’ top prospects closer to home, and it will make moving players around much easier.

The Abbotsford Canucks kick off the regular season on October 16th when they face off against the Bakersfield Condors on the road. The Canucks will have their home opener on October 22nd against the Henderson Silver Knights.
