FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Fort St. John Minor Hockey is gearing up for the start of the new season, and there’s a need for goalies, especially at the U11 level.

Equipment manager Paul Milne says many parents don’t realize that the association provides goalie gear, so trying the position out isn’t as expensive.

“There are kids that don’t know that either, but we have goalie gear for the kids to try. Then the parents don’t have to spend a pile of money for their kid to try it out,” said Milne.

“At the U7 and U9 level, they have two sets of goalie gear and they rotate all the kids through the goalie position to see how they like it. We also put on goalie camps, so those kids can come out and get practice during the week with a goalie coach.”

With just two goalies registered at the U11 division, Milne says they need to fill as many as five spots.

Milne says for an added benefit, anyone who registers to play goalie at U11 will have their registration fees refunded by the end of September.

While everyone is likely excited to start leagues and travel again, the shape of the season is yet to be determined at league meetings.

“Again, it all depends on what the NERHL and North Peace leagues say at their meetings. We don’t know any of that yet.”

Milne says registration at the U7 and U9 levels took a hit, mainly due to last season being heavily restricted.

“Our U7 and U9 registration numbers are quite low right now, so we really want to get the kids back. It was because of last year, I think everyone is holding out to see what happens. We would like to get the players registered as soon as possible so that we can make sure we have all the equipment, coaches and helpers in place to seamlessly start.”

With the ice going in at the Pomeroy Sport Centre, tryouts are just around the corner, says Milne. In fact, Northeast BC & Yukon Trackers will start tryouts on August 27th.

The deadline to register for NEBC U18 Trackers tryouts is Friday, August 13th.
