FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Alaska Highway is once again open after being closed on Wednesday due to forest fire activity near Buckinghorse River.
The highway was opened just after 6 a.m. Thursday, July 1, to traffic in both directions. Motorists should still expect delays in the area, but traffic is no longer being controlled by pilot cars.
Wednesday night the Peace River Regional District upgraded an evacuation alert to an order for residents and businesses in the area of the fire. The District also issued a new evacuation alert for those further south of the forest fire.
The following area is under an evacuation order.
The PRRD says you must leave the area immediately. Evacuees, please call the Peace River Regional District EOC at 250-784-3200 or 1-800-670-7773.

Residents covered by the alert should get prepared to leave your home on short notice. Get your grab-and-go bags ready (which should include several days of clothing, toiletries, and medications), your emergency plan, copies of important documents, and important mementos.
