FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The 2021 Mayor’s Challenge Trophy has been awarded to the Fort St. John squad after Mayor Ackerman scored the overtime winner.
Wednesday’s game was originally planned to be played outside in the North Peace Arena parking lot, but due to rain the dry floor at the Pomeroy Sports Centre was a safer alternative for the friendly rivalry.
After one period of play, Taylor Council led 2-1. At the end of regulation time, neither team had found the edge, sitting in a 3-3 deadlock. The stalemate forced a deciding overtime period.
Over halfway through the overtime period, Mayor Lori Ackerman put the team on her back and scored the game-winner.
The goal sent Fort St. John Council into a frenzy as the Mayor’s Challenge Trophy would once again change hands, and would be coming back to city hall.
