Dawson Creek and Hudson’s Hope are competing for the title of Canada’s Most Active Community this month.
The competition from June 1 to 30 challenges communities nationwide to get moving and track physical activity for a chance to win a $100,000 prize from ParticipACTION.
Dawson Creek is offering activity kits for residents, with croquet, skipping ropes, hoops, horseshoes, and more. The kits can be picked up from city hall with a deposit fee.
“We’re trying to do this in a sustainable way, these can last longer,” said Recreation Manager Erin Oliver, noting the kits will be available even after the competition is over.
The city choose retro-themed items as ParticipACTION celebrates 50 years this month, which was created in the 1970s by the federal government to promote health and fitness.
Hudson’s Hope will hold a series of hikes, free yoga, kids activities, and more this month.
A hike up Bullhead Mountain goes Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at the trailhead, while weekly yoga sessions run Wednesday evenings starting tonight at the pool park. A retro run goes Thursday at Beattie Park, and weekly Bollywood workout sessions take place Friday evenings at the pool park.
Residents can track their fitness minutes contributed through an online app offered through the initiative.
Along with the national winner, there will also be prizes for the most active community in each province and territory.
