FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The City of Fort St. John has proclaimed the month of June 2021 Filipino Heritage Month.

A letter to council from Alan Yu, Founder and Chairman of the Barangay Fort St. John Society, asked for June to be proclaimed Filipino Heritage Month. Yu mentioned that in October 2018, Canada’s House of Commons passed a motion to officially designate the month of June as FHM across the country.

Yu noted the “long synergistic history” the Filipino community has in the city, dating back to the 1960s when the first Filipino nurse moved to the Energetic City.

“Filipinos will continue to be a productive sector of the citizenry with more and more Filipinos set to arrive,” wrote Yu.

“They have brought so much culture to this community, and having that in-situ art show during this last COVID year, really opened up Fort St. John to all of the Filipino artists across and outside of B.C.,” said Mayor Lori Ackerman during Tuesday’s council meeting.
