TAYLOR, B.C. – The Taylor Fire Department will be taking on a youth apprentice this summer.
The position will run for nine weeks and is being funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program. It’s targeted for youth between 15 and 30.
Fire Chief Steve Byford says the position is win-win, giving the department an extra hand while the youth gets a hands-on experience learning about firefighting.
“It’s an opportunity for us to employ a youth in the community, where they have an interest in fire positions going forward,” Byford said. “It also allows us to have an extra person in the summer.”
The successful applicant will work under non-emergency conditions, including fire suppression, health and medical emergencies, vehicular accidents, hazardous material scenes, and other emergencies that might arise.
They’ll also take part in fire prevention, planning, and general maintenance of firefighting equipment, apparatus, and the fire station itself.
