VICTORIA, B.C. – The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure reminds drivers across the province that winter tire regulations are in effect until April 30th.

Winter tire regulations are in effect for most highways in B.C. from October 1st until April 30th in case of early-spring snowfall. Tires should have the mountain/snowflake or mud and snow (M+S) symbol when travelling on designated routes.

Vehicle tires are to be in good condition and have a minimum tread depth of 3.5 millimetres. For those travelling rural highways and mountain passes, tires with the mountain/snowflake symbol have the best traction and handling.

The Ministry has also released some tips for travelling in the winter, like checking the weather forecast and DriveBC before leaving, wear comfortable clothing that doesn’t restrict movement, and also bring warm clothing (boots, coat, gloves, and hat), have an emergency plan – ensure the gas tank is full and the following items are available: windshield scraper and brush, food and water, a first-aid kit and other emergency supplies.

Remember that heavy snowfall or rapidly warming spring temperatures can increase the risk of avalanches in some areas of the province.
