FORT NELSON, B.C. – The Northern Rockies Regional Municipality (NRRM) is launching a pilot project for bear-resistant garbage bins.

In partnership with the Conservation Officer Service and WildSafe BC, around 65 properties will take part in the project.

Residents will be notified if this is something they are eligible for and their existing garbage cart will be replaced with a bear-resistant one at no cost. The carts are designed with a simple locking mechanism that is easily operated with thumb latches.

According to a release on the NRRM website, the carts are to be locked at all times except when placed at the curb for collection day.

Letters will be mailed out to pre-selected residents at the end of the month.

This is one of the initial steps to establish Fort Nelson as a designated Bear Smart Community.
