FORT ST. JOHN, B.C -The Fort St. John Youth Advisory Council is preparing for the second annual Youth Changing Tomorrow conference.
The theme for the conference this year is ‘Steps of Success’, which will cover various youth-specific topics such as self-confidence, finances, fitness and nutrition, trades and climate change. The topics were decided after a survey conducted by the city.
Partners for the event include BC Student Voice, Northern Lights College, and Peace River Hydro Partners. Youth council members are helping find speakers and sponsorships for the conference, among other duties.
The virtual event, which will be hosted by the YAC, the NPSS Student Council, and BC Student Voice is taking place on April 14th.
The council is also accepting new members aged 13 to 18 to help organize activities, volunteer in the community, work on public speaking, and gain leadership skills.
Community Development Coordinator Naomi Gallant says city council initiated the youth council because they wanted a link to youth in the community.
“We ask what their peers are thinking or what their peers would like as well. And then, of course, it’s important if they’re looking to do any sort of self-development or improvement it’s very important to help them do that so that they can succeed,” says Gallant.
Members of each meeting fluctuate because they don’t show up to every meeting. Gallant says there are currently nine people showing up to the Pomeroy Sport Centre meetings to help plan the conference.
