FORT ST. JOHN, B.C – The granddaughter of a 102-year-old Peace Region World War II veteran, Ingvar Ludwig Nelson, is planning a parade to honour her grandfather’s service.

Brooke Nelson wanted to organize a celebration with her family, but gathering restrictions made it difficult to host an indoor party. She decided to organize a drive-by salute also to give the community a chance to honour Ingvar.

“I think it’ll be a good thing for him, his wife and the family because we[want to honour his accomplishments and time in the city]. He’s 102, and it will be a special thing for the whole family,” says Brooke.

Ingvar has lived in the Peace Region since he was a teenager. He was born outside of Edmonton, spent some time in Washington state,  Sweetwater, B.C. and Scotland, where he was stationed during the war.

Nelson moved to a farm outside of Golata Creek before moving to Fort St. John around a decade ago with his wife Maria, who is 91-years-old.

The planning for the event escalated quickly, according to Brooke, after local agencies didn’t hesitate to support the parade.

“I honestly started planning this [on a] Thursday afternoon, and by late Friday, I had all of these people on board.  I also called the bylaws to make sure that we weren’t going to get in trouble.”

The COVID-19 friendly event will have everyone participating meet at C.M. Finch Elementary School at 11:30 a.m. on April 10th. The parade, which will start at noon, will include Fort St. John Mayor and Council, the RCMP detachment, the fire department, and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 102.

Members of the public are also invited to join the parade.

The route will turn down 106th Street, turning left onto 106th Avenue, making its way around the Child Development Centre before returning to the school.

Anyone viewing the parade can park next to the sidewalks on the route.

“We really got to make sure that people know that if they’re gonna watch, they have to be in the vehicle,” says Brooke.

More information is set to be released closer to the date.
