FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The City of Fort St John Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 9600 Block of 98A Avenue just before 5 p.m. on Friday.

Chief Darrell Blades says a resident was shovelling snow into a basement window to slow the fire before the fire department arrived.

While on duty, fire fighters were able to limit the spread of the fire to the room of origin. The crews made a quick exterior application of water to slow the fire growth and then quickly gained access to the suite and extinguished the fire.

“Additional crews arrived on scene shortly after the initial two apparatus response and checked the remaining units for fire extension. Fire damage was limited to the original unit with smoke damage impacting the remaining three units,” says Blades.

The City’s ESS team is working with the displaced occupants to provide some support for the next few days.

Blades says the fire is under investigation but is not considered suspicious.

The Department responded with  four fire apparatus,  three command vehicles and a support vehicle with around 20 members.

This is a developing story. More information will be added as it becomes available.
