FORT ST. JOHN, B.C – Support from residents and staff has resulted in a lofty donation from Safeway to the Fort St. John Salvation Army.

Salvation Army announced Tuesday that Safeway raised over $18,000 for the food bank.

Executive Director Jared Braun, appointed in January, says this is the biggest donation he’s witnessed so far.

“A donation like this gives us the flexibility to meet the ever-changing needs in our community. If we are short on any specific food or other needed items, we can immediately purchase it,’ says Braun.

The grocery store ran a food drive during the holidays encouraging customers to donate, even adding chocolate as an incentive for donations over $10.

The funds will also be used for community and family service centre needs.
