FORT ST. JOHN, B.C – Mayor Lori Ackerman has penned another letter to Premier John Horgan seeking a reopening plan for casinos.

Casinos were required to close on March 16th, 2020, nearly one year ago, which had left 125 people unemployed in Fort St. John.

“The closures have had a lasting impact on workers and their families in all of our communities, with no indication of when they may be able to return to work,’ states Ackerman in the letter on February 17th.

The mayor mentions residents getting their casino fix online “and most likely online overseas for this activity”. She then notes the impacts to the community, such as the loss of income for affected families, lack of gaming revenue to support healthy activity, and no support for those with gambling addictions.

Ackerman also invited the Premier to a virtual tour of the casino to show what’s been implemented to ensure residents’ safety.

“There is no request for any special treatment; we wish to reiterate what we said in our previous letter; we understand that safety is the number one priority. The casino has gone above and beyond other enterprises to ensure this.”

“Workers and their families deserve to know what the Province is doing to get them back to work as quickly and safely as possible.”
