‘Huge news for northern region’: MLA Davies on province’s interprovincial legal review

FORT ST. JOHN – Peace River North MLA Dan Davies believes Premier John Horgan’s update on potential interprovincial travel restrictions is “huge news for the north”.

According to Horgan’s statement, the legal options review made it clear that the government cannot prevent people from travelling to British Columbia.

“Fort St. John is uniquely situated in the Northeast. We share a border with Alberta, there are lots of commerce and employment opportunities that go back and forth between Alberta, just because of our situation,” says Davies.

In addition, most of the current cross border travel is work-related and therefore cannot be restricted.

Davies says this decision resulted from the hard work British Columbians have been putting in to slow the spread of the virus.

“We’re fortunate in B.C. we’re not on a lockdown. People keep saying we’re in a lockdown, but we’re really not. You can go to a restaurant, you can go to a pub still, and you can go shopping. All these things are in place because people have been doing quite well at following protocols.”

According to provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix on Friday, the virus’s trajectory is looking good.

Davies says he’s looking forward to a sense of normal.

“By this fall, we should be at a level of immunity where things are back to normal. So we’re there, there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Let’s keep doing our part.”
