FORT ST. JOHN, B.C – The month of February is set to celebrate the Peace River District Women’s Institute.
During Monday’s council meeting, Mayor Lori Ackerman is expected to proclaim next month as Women’s Institute month, per the North Peace organization’s request.
There are three Women’s Institutes (WI’s) in the North Peace, including Baldonnel, North Pine and Nor’ Pioneer (Cecil Lake).
In a letter penned to the mayor and council on Jan. 11th, the organization said, in 2020, they met their usual charity commitments and the community’s needs in creative ways.
“We were able to donate a scholarship again this year to Northern Lights College. Nor’ Pioneer WI (Cecil Lake) held craft sessions on making Christmas wreaths with the proceeds going to the Women’s Resource Centre. To help celebrate Christmas, the Institutes started collecting chocolate, toiletries and used jewellery for distribution to the people in Peace Villa and other senior facilities. North Pine WI collected articles for the Women’s Resource Center as their Christmas project. To add a little sunshine to Peace Villa, Baldonnel WI donated flowers for their eight dining areas,” said the letter.
The brunt of the WI’s events was held on Zoom, including coffee time twice a week.
February activities will include newspaper articles with pictures of our activities, sharing a video on making antipasto through Facebook or Zoom, continuing Zoom coffee chats, and more.
