FORT NELSON, B.C – Fort Nelson healthcare workers and long term care residents received their COVID-19 vaccine shot as the first shipment arrived in the area.
On Tuesday, in a Facebook post, Northern Health announced the immunizations would go towards the most vulnerable population first. This is based on phase one of B.C.’s vaccination strategy priority groups.
For the next three months, the First Nations Health Authority and Northern Health will focus on these priorities as vaccine supplies arrive.
The health authority says rollout depends on the types of vaccine received, the timeframe of supply, storage and transportation requirements.
The following locations will receive the first phase of immunizations in the Fort Nelson area:
Fort Nelson and area community members over the age of 80 eligible for vaccination will be contacted directly to have an appointment booked. The health authority started calling those who are eligible for the vaccines as of January 12.
Eligible residents will be contacted based on their current information registered with Northern health and/or their Primary Care Provider.
Anyone who wasn’t contacted is asked to contact the Fort Nelson Health Unit at 250-774-8180.
Additional information on the vaccine and priority groups can be found on the Government of BC website.
This week, Fort Nelson First Nation announced a shipment of vaccines is on its way to the community. The limited shipment will be administered on elders over the next couple of weeks.
