FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Although it was done differently this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Fort St. John Legion held a small outdoor ceremony for Remembrance Day.

The ceremony, which saw Peace River North MLA Dan Davies welcoming veterans and few guests, was also live-streamed on Facebook for those to watch at home.

Davies began by thanking those who attended and mentioned that this year marked the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

Davies continued by saying it was “A war that saw over one million soldiers serve when Canada only had a population of 11 million people. This is a true picture of who Canadians are and who we are today. Brave, committed, proud and willing to help when needed.”

After Davies welcome, O’ Canada was played, followed by the Last Post and two minutes of silence. City Councillor, Gord Klassen was also on hand to say a prayer. Klassen also made a speech about honouring the fallen and those who served.

Mayor Lori Ackerman spoke about how this year has been unlike any other and that “these difficult times open a small window to the struggle that our veterans have and continue to go through.” Ackerman also laid a wreath at the cenotaph.

Member of Parliament, MP Bob Zimmer, was also on hand to speak, thanking everyone for their service and attendance.

Fort St. John Royal Canadian Legion President Dave Steves also made a speech. He began by reading some lyrics of a song titled ‘1916’. Steves continued by saying, “We must never forget and strive to educate our young to remember and honour all veterans, young, old and, the fallen.”

Wreaths were then laid on the cenotaph in the following order:
