FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – At the Regular Council meeting on Tuesday, October 13th, the council discussed the usage of Margaret ‘Ma’ Murray Community School gymnasium for the 2019-20 year.

The City of Fort St. John and School District 60 staff have a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that ensures the gym space is accessible to community groups.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the school was closed in March 2020, affecting some numbers and community access.

School District 60 did a comparison report for 2018 and 2019 and showed a 28.6 percent increase in the number of groups using the gym and an increase of 31.5 percent in the number of overall hours used by groups in the community. The number of single-use or other events did decrease by 53.3 percent.

Since Ma Murray had its first students in the 2018-19 school year, this year would’ve been the second year, and with the terms of the MOU, the City and SD60 staff would’ve reviewed and assessed the agreement. However, with the current pandemic, it has been agreed that the school will get another school year and community use.
