FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The City of Fort St. John has awarded the Freedom of the City to Sue Popesku and Jean Leahy.

The ‘Freedom of the City’ is the highest award that can be bestowed on individuals or groups. Popesku and Leahy are the first recipients of the award.

Jean Leahy passed away in August of 2019 at the age of 84. Leahy was a tireless advocate for seniors in the B.C. Peace and helped to create Save Our Northern Seniors. The group continues to this day to advocate for better seniors care in our community.

Sue Popesku passed away suddenly in April of 2020.

Sue spent countless hours volunteering and working to bring out the best of Fort St. John. It would be easier to list the committees and non-profit organizations that Sue wasn’t apart of; then, it is to list the groups she worked and volunteered with during her time in Fort St. John. From various historical groups to the Arts Council to the Fort St. John Hospital Foundation and countless committees and boards in between, Sue was a significant part of Fort St. John

The ‘Freedom of the City’ is the Canadian version of what the Americans refer to as the ‘Key to the City’.
