FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Instead of holding a referendum, the Peace River Regional District is going ahead to invite a petition for the expansion of services at the Charlie Lake Fire Hall.

The proposal to have a petition, rather than a referendum, was made by Board Chair and Director Brad Sperling as it would be the best option during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.

Sperling asked the Board to reconsider the previous resolution made on June 11 to hold a referendum, and instead invite two separate petitions from property owners for new road rescue and medical response services.

Currently, the Charlie Lake Fire Hall only provides fire protection and relies on Fort St. John for other services.

The first year of service expansion would cost approximately $110,750 and $53,750 by the second year.

The need for expansion of services was brought to the District’s attention following the wildfire season of 2016.
