Dawson Creek RCMP seize rifle and find stolen property

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – The Dawson Creek RCMP have released information about an incident that happened on January 18th at a rental property near 92nd Avenue and 9th Street.

At approximately 11:00 a.m. last Thursday, the RCMP received a report from a property management company that a previous tenant was seen carrying a rifle out of a rental property. The property manager believed the rifle did not belong to that person.

Mounties attended the residence and spoke with the male tenant, who is known to police. The man was unable to clarify whether the gun was a toy, an imitation/replica rifle, or if it was deactivated with no bolt or firing pin. Eventually, he claimed that he had given the gun to a friend, stating that “he wasn’t an idiot” and would not leave a gun laying around for ‘criminals’ to find.

A search of the property by Police Service Dog ‘Dirks’ found the rifle lying in the back alley behind the home. The rifle was identified as an M-14 that was intact and useable and was later determined to be a prohibited weapon.

“The Dawson Creek RCMP appreciate it when Police Service Dog ‘Dirks’ attends to provide his assistance during discarded property searches like this,” said RCMP Constable. Jaime Ekkel. “His ability to locate hidden objects such as these are beneficial not only to officer safety but to the public’s safety as well.”

Mounties say their investigation of this incident and the property’s previous tenants is still ongoing after other stolen property was recovered from the home.
