KAMLOOPS, B.C. – The Fort St John Rotary Atom ‘A’ Flyers hit the road this weekend for their tournament of the season in Kamloops. The team had a win, loss, and two ties during the four games of the tournament’s round robin.

The first game saw the Atom Flyers facing off against the host Kamloops squad. Kazen Parkhurst put the Flyers on the board with a beauty set up by Landon Alexander and Drayton Johnson. Johnson scored a goal of his own on an assist from defenseman Parker Fenton. Defenseman Zach Brownlee followed with an unassisted goal. FSJ’s fourth goal was a shorthanded sizzler scored by Carver Lequiere. With three minutes left Kamloops pulled ahead by one, bringing the score to 5-4, but Alexander saved the game with a buzzer beater to tie it up 5-5.

Game two pitted Fort St. John against the Port Coquitlam Pirates. Trayton Ditner put a point on the board just 30 seconds into the game. The Pirates answered with their own shortly after, but Ditner buried another goal at the end of the second to make it 2-1 for Fort St. John. In the third, Carver Lequiere sniped one in unassisted and Parkhurst added another with the help of Ditner to tie the game at 4-4. With 1:41 left in the third, Ayden Pimm passed off to winger VanRensburg who quickly fed Dane Dietz for the go-ahead goal as the Flyers walked away with a 5-4 win.

The Kelowna Mavericks come out flying against the Flyers, who were caught flat-footed and handed a 7-0 loss.

The Rotary Atom Flyers came back in their fourth game against the Cloverdale Colts. The game was another back-and-forth affair as Fort St. John scored first with a quick shot from the hashmarks by Parkhurst. The Colts answered back one minute later. Fort St. John once again took the lead courtesy of a top shelf back hand by Landon Alexander. Again the Colts had an answer. The Flyers took their third lead of the game on a goal by Trayton Ditner assisted by Drayton Johnson, and once again it was followed shortly with a point by the Colts to end the first period tied at three. In the second period both net minders saw a lot of action with no change on the score board. At the beginning of the third, Ayden Pimm slid one in with a quick backhand, but the Colts tied it up on the powerplay just 6 minutes later. Dane Dietz scored a fifth tally to put the Flyers in the lead. Fort St. John held the lead for the remainder of the third, until the Colts snuck one in with 3 minutes left in the game to end it in a 5-5 tie.

Flyers head coach Tyler Kosick commented that while “it was a good learning experience for our team and exposed some stuff that they need to work on as a team.” Coach Kosick believes the talent is definitely there to compete at that level but he said “they need to work a little more as a group instead of 5 individuals on the ice.” The Flyers are off to Grande Prairie for their next tournament this coming weekend.
