FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Fort St. John Huskies got their second win in a row against the top team in the NWJHL last night.
Hosting the Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks at the North Peace Arena, the Jr. C’s were the ones that struck first with a pair of special teams goals. Ethan Buck scored short handed for Dawson Creek just over 4 minutes in, before Jack Bilsner put the Jr. Canucks up 2-0 9:14 with a powerplay goal. The Huskies responded less than a minute later, as Matthew Apsassin scored his third goal in two games assisted by Geoff Dick and Jared Lowen.
Jacob Lang then tied things up with the man-advantage with 4:17 left in the first, helped by Brandon Howard and Jonathan Bateman. Lang tallied his second point of the game with an assist on Kyle Crawford’s go-ahead goal with just 15 seconds left in the period. Joshua Robinson tallied the second assist on that goal.
In the second, the Huskies continued to generate offence. Geoff Dick put the Dogs up 4-2 on a pass from Jared Lowen and Lou Turnbull-Giesbrecht. Apsassin scored his second of the game on the powerplay three quarters of the way through the period, on which Lowen tallied his third assist of the game.
While Mark Readman was able to score another powerplay goal for the Jr. C’s just 23 seconds into the third, the Huskies were able to kill the rest of Kyle Crawford’s spearing penalty, and held the Jr. Canucks at bay through the rest of the frame. After getting called up from the Trackers, Aiden Craig-Steele added an empty-net goal with 1:08 left to play, assisted by Turnbull-Giesbrecht to help the Pups on to a 6-3 win.
The Huskies are back in action on home ice on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, when they’ll also be raising money for lone-time team volunteer Eric Tobler. The Huskies take to the North Peace Arena on Saturday night for a third game against the Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks at 8:00 p.m., before hosting the Beaverlodge Blades on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
