FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – B.C. Minister of Natural Gas Development, Rich Coleman is in Asia meeting with officials regarding the many LNG projects that have been proposed in Canada.
According to an article by The Calgary Harold, Coleman has meetings in Kuala Lumpur with senior officials from Petronas to talk the Pacific NorthWest LNG project.
Coleman says the permit was an important step to get to. He points out that a lot of people globally were watching the situation and wondering if anything would get done and how long it was going to take.
Around 20 LNG projects have been proposed but none have been built as of now.
Some are wondering if Canada has missed the opportunity to be a major player in the LNG industry, with some projects being put on hold because of low LNG prices and oversupply.
Pacific NorthWest LNG had been in a long federal review since 2013, with the decision to move forward coming just recently from the Justin Trudeau government.
Coleman says that when visited Asia in May, it was more of a question if they were going to be open in Canada for business.
But with the federal approval from the Liberal Government, he says that partners in Asia as well as others, are now seeing that Canada could be successful when it comes to LNG development in the country. Coleman isn’t concerned from recent reports that Petronas could try to sell their stake in the project and get out of the LNG market in Canada.
At a speech in Calgary last week, Coleman estimated that 3 major projects and 3 or 4 smaller ones would be taking next steps, according to the article.
