VICTORIA, B.C. – BC Hockey announced earlier today that the Fort St. John Flyers will not be hosting this coming year’s Coy Cup.
In a release this afternoon, which misidentified the Flyers as the Fort St. John Yeti, BC Hockey says that the Whitehorse Huskies will be the hosts of the Coy in March 2017 at the Takhini Arena. The Flyers have won the Coy Cup for the past two years in a row.
“We are looking forward to Whitehorse hosting the Coy Cup in March,” said BC Hockey’s Adult Male Coordinator, Trevor Bast in this afternoon’s release. “The Huskies have reignited Senior hockey in the community over the past year, and we know they will put on a great event.”
“Whitehorse is a passionate hockey community and the support of the Huskies fan base is impressive,” said BC Hockey Chief Executive Officer, Barry Petrachenko. “We are confident Whitehorse will host an exceptional event and look forward to bringing this event to the Yukon.”
Flyers General Manager Lee Hartman said that the decision came as a shock to the team, and aren’t sure why Yukon’s capital was awarded the rights to host the tournament. “Whitehorse hasn’t travelled for an away game since 2014 when they travelled here for a playdown with us,” said Hartman. “They’ve had the benefit of having all their games at home for the last two years, except for travelling to the Coy Cup last year. For us to travel to both Coy Cups in Terrace and Fort Nelson cost us $12,000 plus in those two years. It’s disappointing for us to not be able to try and recoup some of those losses by being able to host it this year.” Hartman added that the Flyers have a meeting scheduled with BC Hockey officials to hear their reasoning for awarding the Cup to Whitehorse on October 12th.
A spokesperson from BC Hockey was unavailable to speak with Energeticcity.ca regarding the decision or the misidentification this afternoon.
