FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Students at Northern Lights College (NLC) were able to get hands-on experience with a helicopter recently.

On September 20th, Highland Helicopters sent a Euro Copter A-Star to NLC. The helicopter was brought by Sean Whitford, the manager of the Fort St. John base.

The helicopter landed at the Fort St. John campus near the B.C. Centre of Training Excellence in Oil and Gas Simulated Wellsite. Students then were given a helicopter orientation.

Students from the Oil and Gas Field Operations and Power Engineering programs then took part in ground school presentations, basic flight theory, machine mechanics, and an in-depth flight and safety discussion.

The students split up into groups and went up to the helicopter while it was on. They learned how to board and load the helicopter before lifting up for a small flight as well as landing.

Sean Whitford said he can’t wait to come back in the New Year and do it again.

“It was a fun day and I can’t wait to do it again sometime in the new year. Thanks for the opportunity to be involved and to Mike and the students for their cooperation.”

There were a total of 38 students that participated.
