Water quality baseline project information shared at Charlie Lake meeting

CHARLIE LAKE, B.C. – The Peace River Regional District hosted a meeting last night in Charlie Lake to go over the results from a water quality baseline project done by GW Solutions.

There were a few primary objectives to this study. One was to build a regional database for all physical hydrogeological data and water quality across the PRRD.

That would allow the sourcing of spatial information (e.g. well locations and water quality monitoring points) and time series data to be collected.

The second objective, according to the presentation given, was to create a visual reference for the groundwater system. To do this, they use software that allows them to create 3 dimensional models that integrate data into visually compelling representations of the subsurface.

The key questions the company took into consideration while conducting the project were:

  • How can water quality data be integrated and analyzed within a single frame?
  • Was is the status of both surface water and groundwater quality in the Peace Region?
  • Are there locations where we should be concerned about water quality?
  • Is the water quality getting better, or is it getting worse?

GW Solutions said that it was hard to access data on surface water and groundwater in the PRRD. GW Solutions also said that a proper surface water and groundwater monitoring plan is urgently needed.

They also said sampling and analysis have to be completed on a yearly basis, from mid-summer to early fall. The plan should be carried out for at least 10 years, according to the study.

Recommendations that came from the report were focused on the province mainly. Of note, they recommended that the province be encouraged to share with the public, any new water information in a timely manner.

They also suggested that the BC Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources be asked to create regulations that characterize and monitor the movement of water in the intermediate zone between depths of 500 and 2,000 metres.
