FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Close to 20 riders are set to take to the roads for a bike tour along the Peace River Valley this weekend to help raise money for diabetes research this weekend.

Blizzard Bicycle Club vice president Dan Webster is hosting the ride with 17 other riders including his 13 year-old son Sam, with the proceeds going towards the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Sam was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, more commonly known as juvenile diabetes in January of last year. Webster says that after being diagnosed at the Fort St. John Hospital, Sam was flown to Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton where he received treatment in intensive care. Since then, Sam has learned to manage the disorder, and has gone on to lead a normal life for a teenager, including trying out for the Fort St. John Bantam Flyers ‘A’ team this year.

Webster was inspired to host the ride in the past year, after attending several other fundraisers for diabetes research. Last year, he and his team raised $6,000 for the JDRF competing in the Tough Mudder. He also rode in the Hancapie Gran Fondo in South Carolina, where he met other riders who were diagnosed as children, along with fellow parents of children with Type 1 diabetes. Though he says the experience was “life changing,” Webster says that the trip to South Carolina isn’t cheap, and decided to host a ride here in the BC Peace.

The ride will take place this Saturday, departing from Peace Island Park, stopping at Charlie Lake, the Peace View Rest Area, Hudson’s Hope Visitor Centre, and the Peace Canyon Dam before finishing at the WAC Bennett Visitor Centre. 18 riders have signed up, and Webster says that the riders are hoping to raise $12,000 for the JRDF. Webster added that it isn’t too late to sign up or donate to the ride. To sign up, visit: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tour-of-the-peace-tickets-25744271810.
